I made this recipe last night and it was AMAZING! I love orange chicken, and I’m so glad I found a way to make it with ingredients from Aldi! I also love that this recipe is a lot healthier than take out orange chicken! This recipe was inspired by a recipe I found online: Crockpot Orange Chicken by The Frugal Girls!
Healthier Changes: I added bell pepper & pineapple so I wouldn’t have to make a side vegetable, left out the soy sauce (less salt) and I changed up the process to make it a dump meal.
Making a glaze: If you want a thick sauce/glaze to top your chicken, you will have to simmer some of the juices from the slow-cooker on the stove with cornstarch for a few minutes, but since you have to cook some rice anyway, you can do both at the same time and it doesn’t add much to the cook time. You can also just eat it with the juices, which you might want to consider if you have littles. See my notes under “kid approval.”
Gluten-Free friends: There are two uncertain ingredients in this recipe. The corn starch and the orange marmalade. I reached out Aldi to find out if Berryhill Sweet Marmalade is gluten-free or not. As soon as I hear back from them I will let you know! Every other ingredient is GF! I figure most of you will already have GF corn starch in your pantry. **Update: I heard back from Aldi. There is indeed gluten in the sweet orange marmalade! So sad!
Freezer Directions: Put everything (except corn starch) into a gallon zip-lock bag and freeze. (liquids, bell pepper, pineapple then chicken. You want the chicken to be first when you pour into the slow-cooker.) Defrost in the fridge 24-48 hours before serving day and dump into the slow-cooker.
Kid Approval: I didn’t think this recipe was very spicy. It had a little kick but nothing more than BBQ, which my kids love. So I was shocked that both my 5 & 2 year old said it was too spicy and refused to eat it. If you think your littles might not like the spice, try serving it without adding the glaze to the top. If nothing else, it makes a great date-night-at-home-food! Just feed the kids mac n cheese. They probably won’t complain!
Slow-Cooker Pineapple Orange Chicken (Aldi-Friendly)
Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 3.5 hours Total Time: 3.5 hours Servings: 4-6
2 lbs Chicken Breast, cubed
16 oz Sweet Baby Rays BBQ Sauce (or Burman’s if your Aldi doesn’t have SBR)
18oz Berryhill Sweet Orange Marmalade Preserves
3 Colored Bell Peppers
20 oz Sweet Harvest Pineapple Chunks, drained
2 Tbs Cornstarch
- Place Chicken in slow-cooker.
- Chop bell peppers into strips and place in slow cooker
- Drain pineapple and put in slow cooker
- Top with marmalade & bbq sauce
- Cook on high for 3-3.5 hours (until chicken is cooked through)
- To make glaze simmer 4 cups of juice from slow cooker with 2 Tbs of Cornstarch til thickened
- Serve over rice
